MOTUS FMCSA: What Truckers Need To Know in 2026

The New FMCSA Registration System Is Here

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) officially launched Motus: USDOT Registration System, the new federal platform designed to modernize registration and authority management for trucking companies in the United States.

The goal of Motus is to replace outdated systems such as URS, parts of MCMIS, and other separate portals by creating one centralized and more secure platform for carriers, brokers, and freight forwarders.

For many trucking company owners and owner-operators, this transition may seem confusing at first. However, understanding how Motus works now can help avoid authority issues, delays, and compliance problems later.

What Is MOTUS?

MOTUS is FMCSA’s new digital registration system designed to:

  • Apply for USDOT Numbers

  • Manage Operating Authority

  • Update company information

  • Submit Biennial Updates (MCS-150)

  • Manage account access and users

  • Improve security and fraud prevention

According to FMCSA, Motus was created to make the registration process faster, more modern, and more secure for the trucking industry.

Why Is FMCSA Changing the System?

For years, FMCSA used multiple disconnected systems that created:

  • Slow processes

  • Duplicate information

  • Access issues

  • Increased fraud risks

  • Unauthorized account changes

With Motus, FMCSA aims to centralize everything into one platform and combat issues such as:

  • Double brokering

  • Identity theft

  • Chameleon carriers

  • Fraudulent authorities

  • Illegal account modifications

In addition, the new system includes stronger identity verification and enhanced security protections for carrier accounts.

What Changes With MOTUS?

One Dashboard for Everything

Motus centralizes:

  • USDOT registration

  • Operating Authority

  • Biennial Updates

  • Company profile management

  • Registration tracking

  • Compliance-related actions

Stronger Identity Verification

FMCSA now uses:

  • Login.gov

  • Identity verification

  • Multi-factor authentication (MFA)

This helps protect accounts and reduce fraud.

Important:

The person claiming the account must use the same email associated as the “Company Official” in the FMCSA Portal.

Better Fraud Prevention

Motus was specifically designed to reduce:

  • Double brokering fraud

  • Fake carriers

  • Identity theft

  • Unauthorized account access

FMCSA added stronger security and verification tools to improve system protection.

Mobile-Friendly Access

The system is now mobile-friendly, allowing carriers to manage registrations and updates from:

  • Phones

  • Tablets

  • Laptops

  • Desktop computers

This is especially useful for:

  • Owner-operators

  • Small fleets

  • Dispatchers

  • Safety managers

Who Needs To Use MOTUS?

According to FMCSA, Motus applies to:

  • Motor Carriers

  • Brokers

  • Freight Forwarders

  • Intermodal Equipment Providers

  • Cargo Tank Facilities

Supporting companies can also use the system, including:

  • BOC-3 Filers

  • Insurance Filers

  • Transportation Service Providers

Are MC Numbers Going Away?

At this time, MC Numbers remain active.

FMCSA has discussed future modernization efforts toward a more centralized USDOT-based system, but they have NOT eliminated existing MC Numbers.

For now:

✅ Your MC Numbers still work
✅ Your current authority remains valid
✅ You must continue maintaining updated registrations

How To Prepare for MOTUS

Step 1: Verify Your FMCSA Portal Account

  • Verify who is listed as the Company Official

Step 2: Update Your Information

Review your:

  • Address

  • Phone number

Incorrect information may cause delays or compliance issues.

Step 3: Complete Identity Verification

FMCSA now requires identity verification through Login.gov.

Have these documents ready:

  • Driver License or ID

  • Company information

  • EIN documents (if applicable)

Common Problems Some Carriers Are Already Reporting

During the rollout, some users have reported:

  • Problems linking USDOT Numbers
